Hawa Dawa, a Munich-based company specializing in air quality management, and the town of Meschede are expanding the observation period agreed as part of the “Smart Air City” campaign by further six months to one year. Thus, Meschede supports the intention to actively address the issue of air quality.

Within the “Smart Air City” campaign initiated by Hawa Dawa in 2018, Meschede was equipped with Hawa Dawa Sentience devices free of charge for six months. An interactive online dashboard enabled the city of Meschede to access real-time digital air quality data. The six months were concluded with a detailed air quality report by Hawa Dawa. This report, which represents both temporal patterns and the frequency distribution of certain values, provides a quick overview and the first basis for decision-making. To further deepen these findings, Meschede decided to extend the measurement period to a full twelve months.

Klaus Wahle, Head of Planning and Building Regulations at the City of Meschede, explains: “Our intention from the outset was to bring clarity to this topic by measuring air quality. Only if the situation is known in detail, concrete solutions can be developed. By extending the measurement period to a full year, we can gain further insight into seasonal changes in air quality values.”

Klaus Wahle also gave an overview of the results of the previous measurements at the recent meeting of the Mescheder City Council. At all measuring points, the loads with particulate matter, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide were in the lower range and, if available, below the legal hourly limits. For example, an hourly average of 200 micrograms per cubic meter of air is the limit value for particulate matter across the EU – in Meschede, the maximum value was 65 micrograms in the Steinstraße. On average, the figure was only 40 micrograms. There are annual limit values for ozone and nitrogen dioxide, and the values measured so far show a very promising trend. Whether the values are below the permissible limits can only be confirmed after a whole year has been measured. For this reason, the town of Meschede will continue to focus on air quality to develop a complete picture of the situation on the ground.
